ACTEMRA® (tocilizumab) is a prescription medicine called an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor antagonist. It is indicated for treating adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), giant cell arteritis (GCA), and patients 2 years of age and older with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. ACTEMRA is thought to work by blocking the IL-6 receptor, a key messenger that tells the immune system to attack healthy cells which may cause inflammation.
ACTEMRA has two treatment method options. It can be administered either as an infusion into a vein at a clinic or as an injection under the skin at home, using a prefilled syringe or autoinjector, after you and your doctor decide which method fits you best. Your healthcare provider will set your dosing schedule based on your weight, lab results, and how well you respond to treatment. See more about financial assistance and cost for treatment.
Common side effects include colds or sinus infections, headache, increased blood pressure, and injection-site reactions. Serious side effects can occur, including severe infections, allergic reactions, or tears in the stomach or intestines. Your doctor will monitor your blood counts, liver tests, and cholesterol, and will screen for tuberculosis before starting treatment. Call your doctor right away if you develop fever or chills, persistent cough, severe stomach pain, or any signs of an allergic reaction (trouble breathing, hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat). Do not take ACTEMRA if you are allergic to tocilizumab, or any of the ingredients in ACTEMRA.
ACTEMRA is FDA approved for the treatment of hospitalized adult and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older with COVID-19 who are receiving systemic corticosteroids and require supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Ask your doctor when ACTEMRA may be an appropriate treatment for you.
